Police Constable Bontle Kekana, 31, based at Naledi police station in Gauteng has appeared in court after she was arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks.
Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Ramovha said the Hawks specialised unit of the SA Police Service is continuously taking a resolute stand against corruption within police ranks.
Kekana was arrested on Wednesday for alleged corruption and extortion.
“The complainant in the case alleged that on February 9 2025, he was at his place of residence when one male and one female unknown to him entered his yard. The female introduced herself as Detective Constable Bontle Kekana and claimed she was investigating a case of robbery of a cell phone reported by a lady working at Naledi Shoprite,” said Ramovha.
“Constable Kekana accused him of being the suspect, and despite his protestations, he was taken to the Shoprite in Naledi, where the robbery complainant identified him as the perpetrator. He was then arrested and detained at Jabulani police station.”
Kekana then allegedly proposed to the robbery complainant that the case could be dropped if the detained man bought her a new cellphone.
“When the robbery complainant requested cash instead, Constable Kekana demanded money from the detainee, who withdrew R1,500 from his bank account and handed it over,” said Ramovha.
“However, Constable Kekana insisted that R1,500 was insufficient and demanded an additional R3,000 - threatening further detention if he failed to comply.”
The case was reported to the Westrand-based serious corruption investigation (SCI) team, culminating in a sting operation where the arrest of Kekana was executed at Naledi police station.

Kekana was consequently charged for corruption and extortion for receiving R3,000 from the complainant.
The police constable made her first appearance at the Protea Magistrate's Court on Friday. She was granted bail of R1,500.
The matter was postponed to April 7 for further investigation.
Meanwhile, Gauteng provincial head of the Hawks, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa has welcomed Kekana’s arrest.
"We commend the swift and decisive actions of the West Rand serious corruption investigation team. This incident is testament to our zero-tolerance policy towards corruption within our ranks,” said Kadwa.
“Any member of our force who engages in unlawful activities will be held accountable and face the full force of the law.”
