If you know J. Cole, you know he’s not here for the drama. The man’s been in the game long enough to know what’s real and what’s just noise.
We’ve seen it before, like when he straight-up refused to jump into the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef.
Cole wasn’t about that life. While others were gunning for headlines, he was keeping it real with his own vibe. Like, let’s not forget that moment in Port Antonio when he made it clear he was not about that battle life. His lyrics? Iconic.
In case you forgot, he said, “I pulled the plug because I’ve seen where that was ’bout to go / They wanted blood, they wanted clicks to make they pockets grow / They see this fire in my pen and think I’m dodgin’ smoke / I wouldn’t have lost a battle, dawg, I woulda lost a bro.”
And his actions speak louder than words. Just recently, Cole made headlines again but, this time, it was for something beyond rap beefs.
During a 2023 interview, "Made For Me" singer Muni Long recounted a time when Cole departed a studio session after hearing her speak negatively.
Long reflected on the incident and, as you’d expect, she didn’t take it personally. She gets it.
“I remember one time I had a moment in the studio where J. Cole was there. And I was just having a bad day that day and I started just talking trash,” Long recalled.
“I was talking to my other friend Theron from R. City, who’s also an artist and a songwriter. And Cole came in the room and within two minutes he sat down, he heard what we was talking about and he got up and left.
“And I just remember being like, ‘Damn, why did he do that?’ But then I realised we wasn’t on the same frequency.”
“He not on that complaining and [stuff we were saying] like, ‘Why these n****s always trying to play us? Who they think they is?’ That kind of conversation does not circulate in higher-level rooms,” she added.
“He didn’t judge me, he didn’t say nothing bad. He sat there, he listened for like a minute and then he got up and left. What happens is when you’re high vibrational like that, most likely those people are going to bring you down.
“You’re not going to be able to bring them up.”
That’s how you know Cole’s got a whole different vibe going on. The rapper is so high-vibrational that he knows that when you’re around people who aren’t on the same level, they’ll pull you down, no matter how high you try to rise.
Cole wasn’t about to waste his energy on a space that didn’t align with his goals. No judgment, just peace. He is out here proving that if you're gonna elevate, you need to protect your energy. Period.
